The wines of Vesuvius were already famous in Roman times for their body and goodness: “Haec iuga quam Nysae colles plus Bacchus amavit – Bacchus loved these hills more than the native hills of Nisa” There are various myths and legends about the name of the wine: «God recognizing in the Gulf of Naples a strip of sky torn by Lucifer during his fall towards hell, wept and where the divine tears fell the vine of the Lacrima Christi arose». Lacryma Christi was produced in ancient times by certain monks whose convent stood on the slopes of Vesuvius. It seems that later the Jesuit Fathers, masters of vast lands in those localities, were almost exclusive producers and holders of this precious wine. Lacryma Cristi comes from the combination of vine – territory, including the environment and the microclimate in this. The presence of Vesuvius has had a decisive influence on the mineralogical richness of the entire area, and consequently on the fruits of the earth which transmits its characteristics, its flavors through the nourishment of the plants rooted in it.
